Raby Castle sits in 200 acres of deer park. John Neville, 3rd Baron Neville de Raby built it between 1367 and 1390. The castle is the haunt of Lady Barnard, who was known by her intriguing title of 'Old Hell Cat'. Her ghost has been reported on the ramparts, undertaking the unusual task of knitting with "red-hot needles". Maria Cotton and the souls of those she murdered in Durham in 1873 haunt the surrounding countryside. It is said that since her hanging, the spirits chase each other over the fields.
